How to Clean and Oil Your UTV’s Air Filter

A clean and oiled air filter is one of the most important things you can do when maintaining your UTV. A dirty filter means dust, dirt, sand, and other small particles that can get deep into and wear down your machine’s engine. However, a well-cleaned and oiled filter will help your machine run much better and lengthen your UTV’s life.

Learn more about cleaning and oiling your UTV’s air filter below.

How to Clean and Oil Your UTV’s Air Filter

STEP 1 — GATHER SUPPLIES

To clean and oil an air filter, you’ll need several supplies:

  • Your UTV’s owner’s manual
  • Gloves
  • Clean cloth
  • Air filter cleaner and oil
  • and anything else your machine might require.

STEP 2 — REMOVE AIR FILTER

To clean and oil your filter, you must take it out of your UTV. How you remove an air filter can vary from one machine to the next. So if you are unsure, refer to your service manual. As you remove your filter, make sure your air boot is clean. It’s easy to knock dirt into it accidentally. If you find that it’s dirty, wipe it out before the air filter goes back in.

STEP 3 — ADD CLEANER TO YOUR FILTER

Next, you’ll want to thoroughly saturate the air filter with your cleaner and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Put enough cleaner on that it won’t be able to dry during those 10 minutes.

STEP 4 — RINSE FROM THE INSIDE OUT

After your filter has been soaked with the cleaner, rinse your filter from the inside out. Rinsing this way helps loosen dirt from the fibers of the filter and will wash them away. If you find the filter still dirty or oily, repeat steps three and four until the filter rinses clear and the filter looks clean.

STEP 5 — LET THE FILTER DRY

Now that the filter is clean, it needs to thoroughly dry. You can shake out any excess water, then set it aside to dry on its own. This step cannot be rushed since the filter needs to be completely dry before you can put oil on.

STEP 6 — INSPECT FILTER FOR ANY DAMAGE

Before you apply oil to your filter, make sure to take a good look at it and look for holes or tears that could let dirt or other small particles through. If it is damaged, do not use the filter!

STEP 7 — APPLY OIL TO FILTER

Next, apply oil to your dry filter. Whether you opt to use a squeeze bottle oil or an aerosol can make sure your filter is completely covered in oil. Let the oil sit for 20 minutes, soaking all the fibers in the filter. After the 20 minutes is up, check the filter for thorough coverage. Apply more oil to any areas that look light or dry.

STEP 8 — REINSTALL YOUR AIR FILTER

Lastly, reinstall the air filter into your machine, verifying that it is sealed correctly. If you aren’t certain, double-check your service manual for instructions.
