How To Properly Clean a Lexan Windshield

After you invest in a quality Lexan windshield, you want to make sure you’re keeping it in tip-top shape. This includes cleaning it properly. Because if you’re not and you can’t see through your windshield, there’s really no point in having one! When your windshield isn’t clean you rob yourself of all of the benefits of having a windshield -- improved vision, protection, and a more comfortable ride overall. As a windshield owner, it’s important to know how to properly clean a Lexan windshield. Here’s how to get started.

First, you want to make sure you have the proper equipment. You’ll need at least two microfiber cloths to help get your windshield sparkling. If your windshield is particularly dirty, you’ll need an extra cloth or two. Next, you’ll want to have a product that will not only clean your windshield but help protect it from future rides. Novus #1 Plastic Clean and Shine is the best product for the job. Lastly, you’ll need a hose or bucket of clear, cool water.

Once you’ve assembled your supplies, it’s time to get washing. The first thing you want to do is remove as much of the dirt, bugs, and debris as possible by gently pouring water over your windshield. You can gently run your hand over the surface of your UTV windshield, but remember to do so extremely gently. You don’t want to accidentally cause scratches while helping loosen the dirt on your windshield.

After removing as much of the gunk as you can with clear water, you’ll want to use your first microfiber cloth to make a pass over the windshield. When it comes to wiping your windshield, you only want to work horizontally. This will help eliminate the possibility of scratching your Lexan windshield while allowing you to wipe it clean. Do not use vertical strokes, and especially do not use circular motions to wipe your windshield. Wipe your windshield down completely, working in horizontal rows. This should remove most of the remaining debris.

As you work, take note of your microfiber cloth. If it becomes dirty, be sure to fold the cloth over until you are wiping with a new, clean section. If you continue to wipe your windshield with a dirty cloth you will increase the risk of scratches. Those fine particles of dirt you are taking off are the biggest culprits of scratches.

The next step is to take your Novus #1 cleaner and lightly dust the surface of your UTV windshield. Novus #1 is both a cleaner and an anti-static and dust repellent. As it works to clean your windshield, it will also help to repel dust on future rides. After you’ve spritzed your windshield, let it sit for a minute or two to allow those properties to do their job.

Lastly, you will take your second clean cloth and wipe your windshield down again (horizontally). Wipe it down just once, and any leftover Novus #1 cleaner will dry on it’s own. If you’ve just done the outside of your windshield be sure to follow up with this same process on the inside.

Whether you’ve purchased a Polaris UTV windshield or a Kawasaki UTV windshield -- one made from MR10 Lexan, the best UTV windshield material or a cheap UTV windshield -- if you don’t properly clean it, it will scratch.

You can make your UTV folding windshield stay looking its best and last as long as possible by cleaning it correctly. And if you’re looking for the best windshield for your side-by-side that is impact resistant, UV protected and has a five-year warranty, look no further than UTV Windshields & Accessories.
