Are UTVs Street Legal In Utah?

Owning a UTV comes with the responsibility of knowing where and when you can ride, but fortunately, there are plenty of places to do this.

If you live in Utah and have a UTV, you may want to know the rules and regulations for driving on roads. Are UTVs street legal in Utah? Stay tuned to find out.

The short answer to this question is yes. The long answer is yes, UTVs are street legal in Utah but there are rules to follow to ensure you are street legal and recognized as so by the state. Here are some of the rules you will need to abide by.

Inspection

It is strongly advised that your UTV be inspected before registering to ride on roads in Utah. Are UTVs street legal in Utah? Yes, if you follow the rules and regulations by starting here.

Insurance

The same rules that apply to your car being driven on the road, apply to your street legal UTV when riding it on Utah roads. You need valid and current insurance to operate your vehicle.

Valid ID

The driver of the UTV must have a valid driver's license to be able to operate their UTV on roads as street legal. The same rule as driving a car, you have to have a driver's license to operate your UTV.

Highway Rules

Drivers of UTV’s need to abide by the speed limit and not exceed 50 miles per hour. For the roads that have speed limits greater than 50 MPH, you must drive to the far right side of the road and have reflective tape visible on both sides of your vehicle.

Out of State Visitors

If you are from out of state and want to drive your street legal UTV on roads in Utah, you can do so without jumping through any additional hoops. The same rules apply to Utah natives who travel to other states. You don't have to complete any special paperwork, you can just ride.

Helmet Requirements

All ATV and motorcycle riders under the age of 21 are required to wear a helmet when driving or riding. In Utah, UTV riders and drivers, however, are not required to wear helmets while in a street-legal UTV. This is left up to the decision of the riders and drivers. It is hoped that drivers will implement this rule for their passengers they have with them. Safety is a priority.

Car Seat Use

Utah law does require the use of a car seat for babies and toddlers for highway use of the vehicle. Off-road use does not have a law to abide by, but it is strongly advised to use one. Make sure to check that all car seats are properly fastened before taking off.
