5 Tips for Buying a Used UTV

If you are in the market for buying a used UTV, listen up! Purchasing a UTV is exciting; however, buying a new one may not be a realistic option.

Thankfully, as new machines come out, UTV enthusiasts sell their older models to make space for newer ones; this is good news for anyone hoping to buy a new one. Before you spend your hard-earned cash on a slightly used UTV, however, it is important to know what you are buying.

Below you will find five tips for buying a used UTV.

Do Your Research

Before you bite the bullet, make sure to do plenty of research. You can do plenty of research and learn what you want, just by looking at online sales platforms. Be sure to take a look at AutotraderUTV TraderCraigslist, or any other local classifieds site. Once you know what you want, look up the machine on Kelley Blue Book to get an idea of pricing and value. Moreover, this may turn out to be an excellent tool for negotiations.

Practice Caution

When you see a low-priced previously owned UTV for sale, it can be easy to want to pull the trigger immediately. However, doing that could get you into some trouble. Since most used UTVs are sold “as is” and do not come with any sort of warranty or guarantee. So, it is crucial that you look into what you are purchasing, not just on the surface, but down deep, which may require some digging.

Ask Plenty of Questions

The sad reality is, many sellers are not always 100% honest. Chances are, you’ll run into someone who bends the truth, purposefully leaves out information, or tries to cover up part of the UTV’s not-so-perfect history. All you can do is try to get the seller talking, so ask plenty of open-ended questions. The more they talk, the more difficult it is to be dishonest and hide important details. Here is a list to get you going:

  • Why are you selling it?
  • Are there other previous owners? How many?
  • What type of riding did you use the machine for?
  • Tell me more about its maintenance history. Any major repairs?
  • Has this UTV been in an accident or rollover?
  • What aftermarket upgrades have been added?

Thoroughly Inspect the Machine

Make sure to thoroughly inspect the UTV

  • Inspect the frame and cage (you may even want to crawl under the vehicle to get a better idea).
  • Look at the engine, make sure it starts up, and let it idle for a bit.
  • Give the brakes a good test run; make sure there are no squeaking or grinding sounds.
  • Check oil and other fluids. Make sure the smells, colors, and levels are all good.
  • Look at the driveline and axles.
  • Inspect the tires and watch for dry, cracked areas. Also, look out for uneven lugs, embedded nails and punctures, and bulging sidewalls.

Pro Tip: To get a better look at the UTV, bring along a jack, tools, and jumper cables to complete your inspection.

Test Drive It

Now for the fun and best part! It is crucial to take the UTV out for a spin. Notice how it handles and responds. How do you feel? Listen to your senses and go with your gut.
